There are several general interest websites on and about
St. John and the U. S Virgin Islands. They can give you
in more detail what the islands are like and what you
can expect.
(A good general guide to St. John especially for beaches,
snorkeling and hiking. Maintained by the author of a
popular local guide book, "St. John, Off the Beaten Path."
(An online version of the quintessential tourist guide
that is available at kiosks and tourist attractions
all over the island. Humorous and informative, a staple
of any visit to St. John.)
(This is the standard government National Park web site
for the Virgin Islands National Park. Good information
on what you'll need to know to navigate the park safely.)
(A site for hikers by a fellow hiker who has been,
on occasion, at odds with the National Park. It is still
a very good site with good map information.)
Getting to St. John is more than just
stepping on and off an airplane. After stepping off the plane
in St. Thomas you must get a cab that will take you to a ferry
terminal where you will catch a ferry to St. John. It is not as
bad as it sounds and it is part of the adventure.
(Where to find the current fares for your cab ride. Don't be
reluctant to ask the driver before departing.)
St. John is such a great place that people like to talk about it all
the time. They also enjoy sharing what they know about the place. Here
are two of the most active, friendly and informative destination
forums on the internet. Lurk and learn or
dive right in. You will be welcomed.
(Take a little time and lurk around at this site. If you have a
question, check the search function first then ask away. These
people can be very helpful. And they love St. John.)
(This is part the Trip Adviser empire, but still a home for friendly and helpful
St. John obsessives. Many of whom also visit the virgin-islands-on-line.com
site regularly. The obsession can go that deep.
